2048 variants, one product: how Merges unlocks Shopify’s new limit

Shopify has lifted one of its biggest limitations. The long-standing 100-variant cap is gone. Merchants can now create up to 2048 variants per product – a twenty-fold increase that changes how complex catalogues can be managed.

For Merges, this is an important milestone. Our app already allows you to combine multiple products (with or without existing variants) into a single native Shopify product. Now, thanks to Shopify’s update, Merges can take this even further – merging larger sets of products into one real product with up to 2048 native variants, without any workarounds.

The end of the 100-variant era

For years, the 100-variant limit forced merchants to improvise. Many split what should have been one product into several, or relied on external apps that simulated options with scripts and metafields. It worked, but it wasn’t elegant.

Shopify’s change removes that barrier entirely. From now on, you can keep every size, colour, finish, and configuration together on a single product page – no splitting, no duplication. It simplifies management, improves reporting, and gives your customers a smoother buying experience.

Why this matters for merchants

Having one product with all variants in one place is more than a convenience.

  • simpler management – one product means one source of truth.

  • better SEO – all your traffic and marketing efforts point to a single canonical product page.

  • cleaner analytics – every sale and visit feeds the same product metrics.

  • stronger user experience – shoppers can view every option without leaving the page.

In short: fewer listings, less confusion, and a more coherent store.

How Merges fits in

Merges was designed from the start to handle exactly this kind of complexity. It analyses your existing product data and intelligently combines multiple products into one clean, variant-based structure.

Unlike other tools that rely on storefront tricks, Merges creates real Shopify variants – with real SKUs, real inventory tracking, and full compatibility with Shopify’s ecosystem.

With the new limit, Merges can now generate and manage up to 2048 variants per product natively. There are no hidden hacks, no theme changes, and no scripts injected into your store.

Technical foundations

Merges runs on Shopify’s latest GraphQL product APIs, which were rebuilt to support the higher variant counts. This ensures your merged products behave exactly like any other Shopify product – only now, they can contain far more combinations.

If your store previously had to stay under 100 variants, you can safely restructure and merge your catalogue using Merges. All your variant data (titles, SKUs, images, inventory settings) remain fully native and synchronised.

Who benefits most

Any merchant with a complex or unstructured product catalogue stands to gain:

  • fashion and footwear – dozens of colour and size combinations per style.

  • furniture and home – material, fabric, finish, and size in one listing.

  • electronics and B2B – large configuration matrices or component options.

  • print-on-demand – multiple fulfilment options that were previously split by variant limits.

If you ever had to fragment a product line into several items to stay under the old cap, now you can finally bring everything back together.

What to keep in mind

A few practical details before merging:

  • themes and apps – some older themes or third-party apps may still assume a 100-variant ceiling. Make sure they’re up to date.

  • very large stores – Shopify applies global variant creation limits per day, though Plus stores are exempt. Plan bulk operations accordingly.

  • testing first – you can always run test merges inside Merges; credits are only used when you save.

A simpler, more scalable Shopify

This update marks a significant shift in how Shopify handles product complexity. The 2048-variant limit brings flexibility that many merchants have wanted for years – and Merges makes it effortless to use.

You can now merge your products into one unified product, preserve your SEO, keep inventory in sync, and manage everything natively inside Shopify.

No more duplicate listings, no custom scripts, no maintenance headaches – just clean structure and full compatibility.
